Age-related diseases
Our research into age-related diseases covers conditions such as type II diabetes, dementia and heart failure. Common disease mechanisms are behind many of these diseases, which develop as we age.
By focusing on these underlying processes, our researchers are aiming to develop new treatments and more effective ways of screening for common diseases. For example, studies are underway to test the effectiveness of a new treatment which has the potential to reverse organ damage associated with diabetes.
Our work in this area will improve the quality of life for people around the world, as well as delivering efficiencies to the NHS in terms of how these long-term conditions are diagnosed, treated and managed.
Our leading research areas in age-related diseases include:
Our new £3m Centre for Advanced Discovery and Experimental Therapeutics (CADET) was set up in 2010 to support research into age-related diseases.
CADET houses state-of-the-art equipment to analyse tissue and blood samples in order to improve diagnosis, develop new drugs and even seek ways of preventing common diseases.
