Genetic medicine
Genetic medicine has the potential to transform healthcare by improving diagnosis, predicting response to treatment and developing new technologies. This is relevant across the whole spectrum of healthcare.
Our 250-strong genetic medicine team based within Saint Mary’s Hospital is one of the most comprehensive in Europe. It includes a range of subspecialties such as paediatric and adult genetics, cancer, pharmacogenetic, ophthalmic, neuropsychiatric, developmental and biochemical genetics.
Clinical and research elements of genetic medicine are fully integrated within our hospitals. This helps us to put research developments directly into improved patient care across the NHS.
Our leading research areas in genetic medicine include:
- Cancer genetics
- Pharmacogenetics
- Genetic testing (Cardiac and Eye)
Our laboratories offer diagnostic tests and screening services, including national specialties. We are a focus for quality assurance, hosting the European Molecular Genetics Quality Network which has 700 registered centres in 50 countries world-wide.
We also host a National Genetics Reference Laboratory, themed on informatics, and Nowgen, focused on public engagement, training and evaluating opinion on new genetic interventions.
