Musculoskeletal and inflammatory disorders
We are a world-leading research centre in musculoskeletal medicine and inflammatory disorders. Our focus is on preventing and treating illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus.
Our Arthritis Research UK Epidemiology Unit is a unique research institution with an international reputation. Located within The University of Manchester, it has over 100 research and support staff.
The group work to identify and modify risk factors for the development and outcome of musculoskeletal conditions, allowing testing to inform patient care.
For example, we are now beginning to explore the possibility of using genetic testing for rheumatoid arthritis using combinations of risk markers that we have identified. This means that we will be able to diagnose and treat people at risk of developing this type of arthritis at an earlier stage, resulting in better outcomes.
Our Manchester Centre for Nuclear Hormone Research in Disease was set up in 2010 to find new treatments for inflammatory conditions such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Working with GlaxoSmithKline, this innovative, joined-up approach will help tackle chronic inflammatory disease.

Manchester’s work in this area was further supported in late 2010 with the award of an Office of Life Sciences Therapeutic Capability Cluster in joint and related inflammatory diseases. The cluster is led by Professor of Rheumatology Ian Bruce.
In April 2012 Manchester was awarded a Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The unit aims to drive scientific breakthroughs in the laboratory through clinical assesment into improved outcomes for adults and children with musculoskeletal disorders.
