Women's health
The Manchester Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre is Europe’s largest pregnancy research centre with over 80 research and support staff.
Our aim is to find solutions to pregnancy problems, in particular we focus on pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, pre-term labour and diabetes.
The Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre is integrated within Saint Mary’s Hospital, which delivers more than 6,000 babies each year. This provides dedicated clinical research space, resulting in direct links between research and patient care.
We work on a wide variety of research projects, from testing potential new drugs for pregnancy diseases, to a feasibility study of lifestyle interventions to reduce the effects of obesity in pregnancy.
Our Placenta Clinic opened in 2009 as the first of its kind in the UK. Specialising in high-risk pregnancies and extreme fetal growth restriction, the clinic performed over 500 examinations in its first year.
Our leading research areas in women's health include:
The Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre’s work is supported by current funding of £10million. This includes a Medical Research Council programme grant, infrastructure funding from the charity Tommy’s and an Action Medical Research Endowment Fund.
