Patients & Public

Involving and engaging patients and the public in research

Patients are placed at the centre of all research carried out within the Biomedical Research Centre. Our patient and public involvement vision is:

"We will use transparent processes for working with patients and the public, ensuring that our translational research can flourish in an informed and inclusive environment."Involving patients and the public in research

We believe that patients and the public should be involved in a variety of ways and at all stages of our work. This ranges from information-giving activities and creative ways to stimulate thinking about translational research, to integrating public opinions into all aspects of our work and empowering patients to contribute to decision-making about research.

We hope to stimulate an informed research environment and create an atmosphere of mutual trust and confidence between the Biomedical Research Centre, patients and members of the public. This will ultimately contribute to the highest quality translational research.

Listen to Professor Dame Sally Davies describe the importance of involving patients and the public in the research process. She is the Director General of Research and Development and Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health and NHS.

Our strategy for patient and public involvement (43KB) sets out how we hope to achieve our extensive goals. Our range of public programmes are delivered through Nowgen: A Centre for Genetics in Healthcare, part of the Biomedical Research Centre.
